Monastery Monastery

Mravaldzali is an 11th-century architectural monument in Racha. The hall church of St. George stands near the village of Mravaldzali, Oni municipality. The church is distinguished by its inimitable bas-reliefs. Several objects of historical importance were kept in it (among them the helmet of Jalal ad-Din and the sword of Shah Abbas I). In 1894 the hall church was converted into a domed building and a bell tower added on the west. The earthquake that struck Racha on April 29, 1991, significantly damaged both the old and the new parts of the church. Restoration work was completed in 2009 and the church regained its original appearance.
