Monastery Monastery

A monument of Georgian architecture, a monastery complex in Kaspi municipality near the village of Chachubeti, on the territory of the abandoned village of Rkoni, in the upper valley of the Tedzami River. The Rkoni complex took shape over centuries — the second quarter of the 7th century, the 13th–14th centuries and the 17th–18th centuries — corresponding to the periods of its monastic life. The complex includes the Church of the Mother of God, a gateway, a chapel, an oratory, a refectory, a tower, a bell tower, the St. John the Baptist church with its gateway, and a bridge. The Church of the Mother of God stands in the eastern part of the complex and belongs to the first layer of monastic life (7th century). It is a three-nave basilica.
