The people call Chailuri fortress Niakhura fortress. It was a military defensive stronghold built in the Middle Ages, probably in the 16th century. It sealed the strategic entrance to the whole Iori valley and, together with Manavi fortress, formed a barrier on the road of any enemy advancing on Tbilisi. The monument is also significant because in its environs was fought the battle that entered history as the last war of independent Georgia.
