The Tsutskhvati cave system, formed in orogenic limestones in the Okriba-Argveti ridge, is called "Maghara" by the locals. The cave consists of 13 levels. The first level from below is a narrow hole impassable to man, through which a permanent stream flows — the Shabataghele. Below the cave the river is called the Chishura. The second level (the main gallery) has the character of an enormous natural tunnel (length 200 m, width 10–30 m, height 10–28 m). Water flows through it only when the Shabataghele floods. In the gallery's branches are springs, a small lake and calcite drip forms. Near the ceiling are preserved beams fixed by human hands — the remains of an old cult structure. From the fourth level upward the caves are dry. In them have been found archaeological monuments from the Middle Palaeolithic (the Mousterian epoch) to the Bronze Age and the historical era, and bones of some forty animal species. Especially noteworthy are: 1. the Bronze Cave (5th level), whose deposits reach a total thickness of 12–13 meters and record the climatic changes of the last 140,000 years; 2. the Upper Cave (11th level), where primitive cult objects were discovered — deliberately arranged cave-bear skulls, femurs and teeth, and the bones of other sacrificed animals; 3. the three caves opening in the cliff (the Railed, the Bats' and the Bear's — levels 7–9), which bear signs of use as strongholds in the feudal era: stone-and-lime walls, cut steps and fragments of kvevri survive. Here too is a large colony of bats. In its antiquity and number of levels the Tsutskhvati cave system is among the first in the world.
