In the environs of Gudarekhi a monument has been discovered — a settlement consisting of two parts: a monastery complex enclosed by a high buttressed wall of dressed stone, and an abandoned village lying north and northwest of the wall. The monastery complex was excavated in 1938–1939 (led by L. Muskhelishvili). Two chronological groups of buildings were revealed: a palace, cells, a wine cellar, a pilastered building, stables and a complex of carved-stone buildings (12th–13th centuries); and annexes northwest of the pilastered building and others (16th–17th centuries). The excavated pottery also falls into two groups. The discovery of pottery-production remains and half-finished wares shows that Gudarekhi had its own ceramic production. Eighteen Georgian coins (of Giorgi III, Tamar, Rusudan and Lasha-Giorgi) and one Mongol coin have been found, indicating the intensity of life at Gudarekhi in the 13th century.
