As we know, in 1812 the Kakhetians rose against tsarist Russia. Prince Alexander (son of Erekle II), coming from Yerevan, joined them, and the Pshav-Khevsurs came to their aid as well, but they were defeated. Alexander made his way through Tianeti to Shatili and spent the whole winter there. The viceroy of the Caucasus, Rtishchev, sent a Russian force toward Shatili under Simonovich. A great clash between the Russians and the Khevsurs took place near the village of Guro, with the Kists coming to the Khevsurs' aid. The Russians' numbers and superior armament (they even had cannon) overcame the brave and guileless bands of the mountaineers:
