Shikhiani Church

Church Kakheti, Kvareli district

Church Church

The Shikhiani church now stands alone, with traces of a settlement visible around it. A village called Shikhiani once stood here; latterly the church kept the name "Aghdgoma" (Resurrection). Because the place was marshy and malarial, the inhabitants moved away and merged with Eniseli. That the village was called Shikhiani was known by tradition to some residents of Eniseli and Gremi, and is confirmed by an inscription on the church wall. Shikhiani is nowhere mentioned in Georgian historical sources; it appears only a few times in the writings of Russian envoys at the end of the 16th century
