The Tsughrughasheni church stood deserted for many centuries, and in that time its roof and dome were completely damaged, along with some of its details. Early historical sources contain no records of the monument; what we know comes only from the inscriptions on the church itself. There are three. From the first, to the right of the west door, we learn that the church was built by a certain Hasan son of Arsen in the reign of "the great Giorgi, king of kings" (stylistic analysis shows this must have been Lasha-Giorgi). The second inscription, above the south door, contains almost the same information. The third, unfinished inscription is carved above the west door.
