The Svaneti expedition of the Center for Archaeological Research (led by Dr. Sh. Chartolani) carried out excavations at the abandoned village of Kheshkili in 1997–98, in preparation for the restoration of the St. George's church. The cemetery associated with the church was partly studied, and the medieval monuments surviving at surface level on the village site were measured and recorded.
