Reservoir Reservoir

Tbilisi reservoir — the "Tbilisi Sea", Samgori reservoir — is a reservoir in eastern Georgia on the Iori plateau, northeast of Tbilisi. It was created on the site of the salt lakes of Avlabari, Ilguniani and Kukia, and stretches from northwest to southeast. It has been in service since 1953. No ice cover forms on the reservoir; in cold winters shore ice and slush appear. Frequent winds bring rough water. The water's mineralization is 300–500 mg/l. The Tbilisi reservoir is an oligotrophic body of water, fed by the Iori River, which enters it through the upper main canal of the Samgori irrigation system. Its water is used for irrigation, for Tbilisi's water supply, for fisheries and for water sports. Water leaves the reservoir through the lower main canal of the Samgori irrigation system and the Ghrmaghele main canal.
