The foundation of the Trinity cathedral was laid on November 23, 1995, to a design by the architect Archil Mindiashvili. On November 23, 2004, the feast of St. George, the cathedral was consecrated by Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia. The clergy placed relics brought from holy places into the foundation. The height of the Trinity cathedral from the ground to the base of the cross is 77 m, and the cross itself is 7.5 m; the foundation reaches 13 m below ground. The cathedral is 70 m long and 64 m wide. Its underground level holds 5 churches, and above ground there are 4 more. The architecture combines old Georgian ecclesiastical building with a modern interpretation.
