The Gergeti Holy Trinity church is a walled complex of Georgian architecture in Kazbegi municipality, 2,200 m above sea level. The complex includes the domed Trinity church (1330s), the bell tower (second half of the 14th century) and the council house (15th century). The term "Gergeti" in its name comes from the location where the church stands. From early times the village of Gergeti lay on the left side of the Tergi River, while on the right side stood Stepantsminda, the administrative center of historical Khevi. The church is built on the left side, on the territory of the old village of Gergeti. In the last third of the 20th century — in 1966 — the village of Gergeti was merged with Kazbegi, but the church's old name remained unchanged, and by custom it is still called the Gergeti Trinity.
