On March 17, 1996, on the great feast of the Veneration of the Cross, the foundation of the church of St. Abo of Tbilisi was consecrated at the foot of the Metekhi cliff, beside the new bridge. The future church of St. Abo is a small two-nave basilica (about 5 × 7 m), each nave with a single-pitched roof. The church joins the cliff and grows naturally into it. It is being built of large stone blocks with lime mortar.
