The Ioseb Grishashvili Tbilisi History Museum (Karvasla) was founded in 1910 as the "City Municipal Museum". In 1943 it was named the Tbilisi State Historical-Ethnographic Museum and housed in a historic building — the former caravanserai of Tbilisi. The museum's collections hold more than 50,000 exhibits, reflecting the history of Tbilisi from the end of the 4th millennium BC to the present. The museum preserves archaeological, ethnological and documentary material, a very rich photographic collection, and examples of folk, applied and fine art. Alongside material on the past, the Tbilisi History Museum also presents contemporary art: since 1986 exhibitions of Georgian and foreign artists have been held in its contemporary art halls.
