Located in the town of Akhaltsikhe on the left bank of the Potskhovi River, founded no later than the 9th century. Rabati castle was the residence of the atabegs of Samtskhe, the Jakeli family. In the 12th–13th centuries the castle was rebuilt and enlarged; the toponym "Akhaltsikhe" (New Castle) dates from that time.
