The buildings date to the 17th–18th centuries. The fortified halls of the Amilakhori (Amilakhvari) family and the historical events connected with them are mentioned repeatedly by 18th-century historians (Sekhnia Chkheidze, Vakhushti Bagrationi, Papuna Orbeliani and others). In the 18th century, as their power grew and their lands increased, the residence of the Amilakhvaris — great feudal lords of Kartli — moved from Skhvilo down to the lowland, to Kvemo Chala. In that century a palace and fortified hall stood here
