Abastumani is a townlet in southern Georgia, in the Adigeni municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. It lies on the southern slope of the Meskheti range, in the valley of the Otskhe River, 25 km from Adigeni and 28 km from Akhaltsikhe. Abastumani has tuberculosis sanatoria, the Abastumani astrophysical observatory, and cultural, educational and healthcare institutions. In the 9th–10th centuries it was called "Odzrkhe"; in the late Middle Ages "Otskhe" took hold, and from the 19th century "Abastumani". The present name may derive from the family name of the Abazasdze. Abastumani is a mountain climatic resort (1,340 m above sea level). The building of the resort began in the 1870s. It received townlet status in 1926.
