Sakazhia is a closed horizontal cave, 6 m high and 30 m long, formed in Lower Cretaceous limestone and rich in archaeological, palaeobotanical and palaeozoological finds. Evidence of the Palaeolithic was first confirmed in the Caucasus here. The cave abounds in remains of ungulates (bison, deer, roe deer), predators (cave bear, cave lion, lynx and others) and smaller mammals (otter, badger). The quantity of animal teeth and bone fragments recovered reaches several tens of thousands. This material belongs to the Upper Palaeolithic (Aurignacian–Solutrean).
