The Takhtitepa mud volcano is a monument of inorganic nature. It lies south of the Dali reservoir, 620 m above sea level, a hillock several meters high on the crest of a ridge. The largest mud crater is 3.5–4 m across. It, like the small vents around it, is permanently active, discharging mud, oil and gas. The mud issuing from the vents merges and flows down into the ravine. The monument and its surroundings are built of sandstones and clays.
