Along the road running beside Lake Saghamo stand monuments of Georgian architecture — three churches, with a fourth raised on a high mountain. Of the three, the earliest and most distinguished is the northernmost — a sizable 10th-century hall church. Its entrance is through a somewhat later southern annex, one side of which opens in two arches resting on a central column. The building was originally covered with a vault; it now has a flat wooden roof. The walls are faced with well-dressed, evenly coursed blocks, while the door and window heads are adorned with masterly carved ornament, figured stelae and images of human figures.
