Ekhvevi St.Mary's Church

Church Shida Kartli, Khashuri district

Church Church

Ekhvevi is a monument of Georgian architecture of the beginning of the 11th century — the single-nave church of "Deda Ghvtisa" (Mother of God) in the valley of the Kvirila River, 10 km from Sachkhere. Notable are the carved tympana of its north and west entrances and the surrounds, heads and paired twisted "columns" of the west and east windows, akin to the decoration of the 10th–11th-century monuments of Tao-Klarjeti. The carving is of high professional quality. Originally the church had chapels, which were demolished together with the remains of the old cells during repairs at the beginning of the 20th century. With funding from the Georgian Monuments Protection Fund (the Georgian patron Bidzina Ivanishvili), the restoration of Ekhvevi is beginning (architect-restorer T. Nemsadze).
