The fortress was built in the early feudal period. Bebristsikhe is first mentioned in Georgian historical sources by the chronicler of Lasha Giorgi: "King Demetre died at Bebris Tsikhe and was taken to Gelati, to the new monastery he himself had consecrated." This happened in 1156. Vakhushti Bagrationi refers to it as Beltis Tsikhe.
