Church Church

Armazi of Ksani, the St. George's church, is a monument of old Georgian architecture in the historical Ksani valley, near the village of Armazi. It was built in 864 — a remarkable monument of the transitional epoch of Georgian architecture (7th century – first half of the 10th). Armazi, like the Tsirkoli church, has a composition unusual for Georgian architecture: the main space is covered by a dome resting on four free-standing piers. The dome has no drum and is enclosed outside beneath a gabled roof. The church's walls and vaults are of rough stone; the conch arch, the dome, the piers and other details are of travertine. Painting of the 9th century, the chancel screen and a lapidary inscription survive.
