The Tsirkoli church belongs to the transitional period (second half of the 7th century – first half of the 10th). The exact date of its construction is unknown, but judging by its architecture and decoration it was built in the 8th century. No records of its builder survive either. Near it stands a fortress that first appears in Georgian historical sources in connection with events of the 10th century.
