Alevi is an old village on the lower course of the Aleuri, a left tributary of the Ksani (present-day Akhalgori district). It was divided into lower and middle quarters, which later became separate villages (today's Kvemo Alevi and Shua Alevi). People lived in these parts as early as the Bronze Age, and burials of the classical period also occur. In the feudal era Alevi belonged first to the Ksani valley district, then to the duchy of Ksani. It belonged to the Alevi Trinity church (8th–9th centuries), which stands 3–4 km to its southeast on the crest of Unagira mountain. The so-called Golden-Gated Trinity church of Alevi was a rich and famous shrine in eastern Georgia. The church is a hall church with a rectangular sanctuary and a conch resting on squinches. In 1804 more than 500 people lived in Alevi in 33 households. In 1865 it belonged to the Zemo Alevi rural community of the Ksani police district and counted 50 households.
