The complex of the Church of the Archangels of Chadijvari stands in the center of the village, enclosed by a wall. In the right part of the sanctuary a working well is dug. By tradition, the village's name derives precisely from this church and well: when an enemy invaded the village, the priest, to protect it from the foe, hid the cross in the well in the church's sanctuary (the right-hand room) — the well still exists — that is, he put the "cross in the well" (cha-shi jvari), whence the name, later transformed into Mchadijvari. By another version, the priest hid the cross not in the well but in a loaf of cornbread (mchadi).
