The village of Tkhilovna is mentioned in historical sources in the 15th century, one of the hardest and heaviest periods of our homeland. The palace and churches lie 2 km west of the village, near Lisi Lake, on the former homestead of the Gabashvilis, and date to the 17th–18th centuries. The turn of the 14th–15th centuries was a time of exceptional hardship in Georgia's history: the country endured the devastating invasions ("eight hunts") of the hordes of Timur, which inflicted enormous damage on the economic, social and cultural life of the Georgian people. King Giorgi's body was buried at Mtskheta by his brother Konstantine, son of Bagrat V, who became king of Georgia as Konstantine I (1407–1411). It was in this grievous and ruined state that the 15th century began, and it is precisely in Konstantine I's time that the village of Tkhinvali (Tkhilovna, Tkhilnara) is mentioned. The village belonged to the Gabashvilis; in 1466 King Konstantine granted it to the Javakhishvilis, and from the beginning of the 18th century it was a domain of the Tsitsishvilis.
