Church of the Savior (Matskhvar)

Church Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, Lentekhi district

Church Church

Sixty-three Christian churches stand in the village, with countless holy objects and precious painted and repoussé icons and crosses. The church walls clearly preserve frescoes of the 10th–12th centuries. The village once housed the gold repoussé icon of St. George with which Queen Tamar was crowned. Today Latali has some twenty-five family churches, mostly ruined, many of them built in the mountains away from the road. The best known are Matskhvari, the Church of the Savior (village of Matskhvarishi); Taringzeli, the Church of the Archangel (Matskhvarishi); Jgragi, the St. George's church (village of Lankvami); and Ieni (village of Ienashi).
