According to legend, the church builders kept their food and drink in a deep pit. A venomous snake slithered into the pit; a hawk (bora) soaring in the sky saw it, dropped like a slingstone, flew into the pit and died there. The builders therefore named the church Bora's Sanctuary. In the scholarly literature the monument is also known as Bodzis Sakdari.
