The church stands in Laghami, the old quarter of Mestia. The first story of the two-story basilica is dedicated to the great martyr virgin Barbara (Barblash) and dates to the 9th century; fragments of fresco painting survive in it, with two layers of painting clearly distinguishable. The second story was added in the 13th–14th centuries and is adorned with beautiful frescoes. Painting is clearly visible on the church's outer wall: the north facade bears "The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise", and the east "The Hunt of St. Eustathius". The church preserves a 13th-century gold-and-silver repoussé icon of the Savior (Pantocrator).
