Chapala fortress

Castle/Tower Kvemo Kartli, Bolnisi district

Castle/Tower Castle/Tower

A medieval fortress in Kvemo Kartli, 2–3 km to the right of the junction of the Mashavera and Poladauri rivers. It is built on the crest of a great rocky hill standing on the open plain. It is mentioned in the sources from the 17th century, when it belonged to the Sologhashvili family. Archaeological excavations on the fortress's territory have revealed the remains of various utility buildings and water cisterns. In one of the towers a bath was excavated, consisting of octagonal warm and hot rooms, a furnace room and a pool. Inside and outside the bath were found fragments of window glass of various colors, glazed tiles, plain ceramic sherds and one glazed vessel with an Arabic inscription. The material dates to the 11th–13th centuries and is kept in the Georgian National Museum.
