The name of the church, "Ertatsminda", is connected with the much-suffering martyr of the Christian church St. Eustathius (Estate), to whom it is dedicated. Over time "Estate Tsminda" became "Ertatsminda" in popular speech, and the village, as P. Ioseliani believes, took the same name from earliest times. Proof of this is surely the closely related older form "Estatsminda", found in old historical documents relating to Ertatsminda.
