Zenubani is mentioned in historical sources from the end of the 14th century as a village belonging to the Catholicosate, within the bishopric of Ertso-Tianeti. Local roads passed through Zenubani — one leading toward Didgori, the other crossing the ridge dividing the Nichbisi and Kavtura valleys. Foreign mountain tribes raided the village more than once. In the first half of the 18th century a great clash between Ossetians and Mtiulians took place nearby; the people call the place "the Lake of Blood".
