The buildings of the Mtavarta complex are arranged in two groups on an almost circular site enclosed by a mighty wall. One group consists of the St. George's church in the middle of the courtyard with several structures added to it on the south and west; the other, of a two-story dwelling in the northwestern part of the courtyard with a two-room building adjoining it on the east. The buildings are badly damaged; most have been reduced to ruins and are overgrown with dense vegetation.
