Of the Itria monastery complex the geographer and historian Vakhushti Batonishvili writes: "Above Surami, from the south, the Urtkhvis Khevi joins this water; above it stands the historic monastery of the All-Holy, undomed, grandly built, now tended only by a priest." The Itria complex of the Mother of God was built at the end of the 16th century at the commission of Catholicos Dorotheos. During construction "the Urums burned it", but the Catholicos completed the monastery nonetheless and endowed it with many church objects
