The fortress was built in the 12th–13th centuries, in connection with the establishment of the Surameli duchy. It was thoroughly repaired in the second half of the 16th century; wall remains from that period survive in the northwest corner of the enclosure. The remaining parts were rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries.
