Castle/Tower Castle/Tower

On the left side of the Ksani River, on the plain, stand the ruins of a walled fortress — the residence of the Mukhranbatoni princes in their last period. The fortress bears two inscriptions. According to the one above the citadel gate, the fortress was built in the 1730s by Mamuka Mukhranbatoni with the help of Levan Mukhranbatoni. In 1756 the badly damaged fortress was renewed by the royal steward Konstantine Mukhranbatoni. In his inscription Konstantine tells us that the place had been laid waste by enemies and its inhabitants "scattered abroad"; he "walled it round", gathered the people and settled them. In case of enemy invasion, not only the village of Mukhrani but the neighboring villages too took shelter behind the wall with their movable property.
