In the 12th–13th centuries an important trade and military-strategic road passed through Rkoni, linking Shida Kartli with Javakheti and Trialeti and then, via Armenia, with the Near East. This encouraged extensive monastic construction in Rkoni and its surroundings. In the second half of the 13th century the great feudal lord and statesman Kakha Toreli bought the village of Khovle and donated it to the Rkoni monastery
