More than one important political event of feudal-era Georgia is connected with Ruisi. In the Ruisi Church of the Mother of God, Giorgi II (1072–1083) was crowned king of Kartli — at that time Ruisi played the role of Kartli's capital. In 1104, at the initiative of King David IV the Builder (1089–1125), the Ruisi-Urbnisi church council was convened — "in the environs of Kartli, at the two neighboring bishoprics of Ruisi and Urbnisi".
