Stylistically it dates to the first third of the 7th century. Two inscriptions survive on the monument: the first (on the east facade, below the window head) dates to the 10th century and records the cutting of a canal to the village of Samtserisi; the second (in the upper part of the south facade) concerns the church itself: "May God pardon Merab Panaskerteli, its second builder." At the turn of the 15th–16th centuries the owners of the place (namely Merab Tsitsishvili) repaired the church and consecrated it in the name of St. George (originally it was called Holy Cross). The overseer Saba mentioned in the inscription directed the church's renewal.
