One of the 16th-century royal palaces is that of Levan, king of Kakheti (1520–1574), the so-called Tskhrakara. It stands between the villages of Kvemo and Zemo Alvani, above the Alazani valley. Nearby is the basilica of St. John the Baptist, in which badly damaged portraits of King Levan and Queen Tinatin survive. Brosset mentions the palace in passing — "a great and beautiful hall, most solidly built" — calling it Sanagharo. It is briefly mentioned in D. Albaneli's letter as well, while the monument's description, plan and sections were published by G. Chubinashvili.
