In the St. George cathedral of Alaverdi is buried its founder, St. Ioseb of Alaverdi, one of the Assyrian Fathers. Until recently the saint's remains were believed to lie on the north side of the cathedral, but that grave proved symbolic. It is likely that in the 15th century (during the cathedral's first restoration) the saint's remains were deliberately hidden, so that they would not be desecrated during invasions and unrest.
