Nature reserve Nature reserve

The Sataplia state reserve lies on the territory of the villages of Gumbra, Banoja and Khomuli in Tskaltubo municipality, on Mount Sataplia, 500 m above sea level. It was founded in 1935 and covers 330 ha. The reserve is of complex character, containing geological, palaeontological, speleological, zoological and botanical monuments. The relief is hilly. 95% of the territory is covered with relict Colchian-type forest of beech, chestnut, hornbeam, elm, boxwood, zelkova, alder, linden, oak, wild pear, crab apple and more; the undergrowth forms impassable thickets, and lianas abound. Among mammals, the jackal, marten, badger, fox, hare and squirrel are common here; roe deer occasionally enter, and birds are plentiful. The reserve's territory is rich in karst caves. Here too some 200 footprints of predatory and herbivorous dinosaurs have been discovered, imprinted in marly limestone. The reserve has a biospeleological museum.
