Chain Bridge

Bridge Imereti, Kutaisi

Bridge Bridge

The Chain Bridge is the oldest of Kutaisi's bridges; remains of a 5th-century bridge have been found here. The main piers of the present bridge date to the 1770s; a wooden bridge was first built on them, known as the Archbishop's bridge. In the 1850s, after a wooden truss suspended on chains was erected, the bridge received its present name. In 1869 the bridge collapsed under crossing wagons; it was rebuilt at the city's expense in 1884–85. A metal truss made in England by Garner was installed by the engineer G. Zalski (the new bridge was also called the Royal bridge). The present bridge was restored in 1995.
