In 1723–35 the Ottomans, who then held Tbilisi, built a Sunni mosque at the foot of Narikala. In the 1740s the Persians destroyed it. In 1846–51 it was rebuilt to a design by the architect Scudieri, but at the end of the 19th century that building too was demolished and a new one erected in its place — now the only functioning mosque in Tbilisi. Both Sunnis and Shiites pray here.
