A functioning synagogue in Tbilisi, built in 1910, stands between Tumanian and Leselidze streets. The Georgian and Jewish peoples are bound by 26 centuries of close cultural ties; Jews have lived in Tbilisi since the city's founding. In the 12th century, as a mark of respect for the Jews and their faith, King David the Builder ordered that the slaughter of pigs be forbidden in this quarter.
