The Chitakhevi monastery of St. George was built in the 9th century by Kristepore and Tevdore, disciples of St. Grigol of Khandzta. The monastery complex includes a basilica-type church and a later two-story bell tower. During enemy invasions in the 16th century the monastery was ravaged and its monks martyred and killed. It was restored in the 20th century, and in 2002 the monastery was revived.
