The administrative center of the Shida Kartli region and of Gori municipality, it lies at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Didi Liakhvi rivers, 588 m above sea level, 76 km from Tbilisi. Its population is 49,500 (2002). The main sights are the cathedral, the theater, the historical-ethnographic museum, the Joseph Stalin house museum and Gori fortress.
