In the 17th century King Rostom had one of the missionaries living in Gori, Cristoforo Castelli, draw a picture of Gori fortress. Castelli's drawing is the earliest surviving depiction of any Georgian fortress. It shows that most of the fortress as it exists today was built precisely in Rostom's time. In Castelli's drawing four banners fly over the fortress; on its slope are drawn a camp, horsemen armed with spears and more, along with one- and two-story houses.
