The church went underwater after construction began on the Zhinvali hydro complex in Dusheti municipality; the power station's first unit came on line in 1985, and the village of Zhinvali was entirely submerged by the reservoir. The church is now in a very grave state: the roof is close to collapse and the walls are crumbling. It is also threatened by dead trees on the hillock, which are about to topple and could fall on the church.
